Sani People’s Taboos

There are many taboos with religious features in Sani people's life. For example:

Never cut trees in Mizhi forest; never allow livestock to enter Mizhi forest; women are prohibited from entering Mizhi forest.

Women are prohibited from crossing the timbers, plows, hoes, poles, and horse reins, etc. for house building.

Women are prohibited from going to the podium of the wrestling field.

Never carry the bodies that died outside the village inside.

Never stamp on stove with foot.

Outsiders are prohibited from entering the puerpera’s room during confinement in childbirth.

Never watch snakes’ mating.

Never watch multiple snakes twist together.

Never fart loudly in front of them.

Boys and girls are prohibited from dating in front of their elders.

Never touch ancestral spirit tablet.

Never call an adult by his or her infant name.

Never knock a bowl during meal.
