Sani
people have a legend regarding the origin of Dasanxian:
in ancient times,Yi people lived in the deep forests and planted crops by slash-and-burn
cultivation. During the planting season, hereditary
headman forced people to work on his land first, and then poor people were
allowed to cultivate their own. In order to seize the time, people started to
planting seeds quickly as they could not wait for the carbon on the "fire
land" to be completely extinguished. Because they had no shoes to wear and
felt their feet hot and uncomfortable, people had to lift their feet up and down twice every
three steps, having the two feet take turns. Sometimes they felt burnt so much
that they shouted “ahzz”. During slack season, people recalled these movements and felt
that these could express their inner feelings. So they used Dasanxian as a
matching instrument to design dancing, which became today's Dasanxian Dance,
also known as "Tiaoyue”.
