When rice is ripe at the end of
lunar July and August, patriarchs will agree on the time for
the whole village to spend New Rice Festival. During the festival, each household goes to the field to pick up a few full grains with early maturity, long earhead, and plenty grains to put them in the
warehouse, indicating that the gods have entered for fruitful harvest this
year. The next day, people dry and thrash some of these grains to cook rice.
And they kill a pair of chickens and ducks as sacrifice for ancestors and gods
of universe, water, earth, warehouse, and stove; then they ask friends and
relatives to taste the new rice from the feast.
New Rice Festival is also a good time
for selecting seeds. People select the seeds for the next year according to the
growth of rice. Hosts and guests also introduce and exchange their seeds.
